JCI actively organizes students to apply for National Undergraduate Training Program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (hereinafter, National Innovation) and Student Research Training Program (hereinafter, SRTP). Since 2014, all projects that JCI students apply for have been completed normally and not any abnormal termination or unsuccessful cases. The number of projects obtained has also increased significantly from the initial 3 each year to the current 12, and the number and quality of them have steadily improved.
The Category Introduction, Application Process and Management Methods of National Undergraduate Training Program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship & Student Research Training Program
According to the “Notice of the Ministry of Education on the Implementation of the National Undergraduate Training Program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship” (MOE Doc[2012] No. 5), in order to strengthen the training of innovation and entrepreneurship, enhance the innovative ability and entrepreneurship capability on the basis of innovation ability, CQU organizes students to apply for innovation and entrepreneurship projects in May each year. The innovation projects and SRTP include the procedures of project setting, project proposal (only for “National Innovation”), mid-term examination, and final work report acceptance。All these matters related to projects are organized and managed by JCI Teaching Affairs Office. JCI Student Affairs Office is responsible for entrepreneurial projects.
I. Category Introduction
i. National Undergraduate Training Program for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (hereinafter, National Innovation)
The undergraduate innovation program is the program that undergraduate innovation teams independently carry out research-based learning, experimental method design, equipment and material organization, experiment implementation, data analysis and processing, as well as report writing under the guidance of their mentors. Likewise, the entrepreneurship training program means that an undergraduate team will be under the guidance of an innovative entrepreneurship mentor. Each team member will play one or more specific roles in the implementation of the program, mainly complete the preparation of business plans, feasibility studies, simulation of business operation, participation in entrepreneurship competition training and writing business report, and so on. The entrepreneurship practice program aims at undergraduate or graduate teams with better innovation and more mature product or service models. They are organized to participate in entrepreneurship competition training and conduct entrepreneurial practice activities under the guidance of innovative entrepreneurship mentors.
ii. Student Research Training Program (hereinafter, SRTP)
SRTP aims to cultivate the undergraduates’ rigorous scientific attitude, innovative consciousness and teamwork spirit, and also to improve their scientific research ability and comprehensive practical ability. Under the guidance of mentors, students conduct research and exploration independently and understand and master the basic methods and means of scientific research. Driven by interest and guided by mentors, participants go through the process of project setting, feasibility analysis and demonstration, experiment design, result analysis and comparison, as well as research report writing . Besides, students are required to manage the project autonomously during the project implementation.
II. Project Cultivation
In accordance with the “student-centered, teacher-oriented, project- and interest-driven, free development and capacity enhancement” principle, CQU encourages cross-disciplinary, inter-department and inter-grade cooperation projects. All colleges should actively publicize to students through the internet, class meetings and other channels to stimulate their awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship, and practically promote the innovation and entrepreneurship education in CQU. All colleges, by combining their own advantages in teaching and research, are also expected to take the initiative to provide policy, information, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship guidance to students who are interested in innovation and entrepreneurship training.
III. Requirements
The same student can only apply for one project among the national undergraduate innovation training, entrepreneurship training and entrepreneurship practice project, not at the same time to take part in more than one project, otherwise he or she will be disqualified. Students who have participated in the National Undergraduate Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program cannot apply again. Among them, entrepreneurship training project must be submitted through the college where their project leader is located, and each project is planned to be funded 10,000-20000 yuan. The entrepreneurship practice program is submitted directly through the school Youth League committee, and each project is planned to be supported 5,0000-100000 yuan.
The same student can only participate in SRTP once, and students who have already participated in the program cannot apply again.
i. Application Requirements
Students applying for the “National Innovation” program must have a GPA score of 2.5 or higher, and fail less than 2 courses and have enough spare time. Students who do not meet any of the above conditions, but have special skills may apply, subject to the special examination and approval of the college.
Students applying for the “SRTP”must be good at learning and have a GPA score of 2 or higher, an average of no more than 1 retake course in the academic year, a strong interest in SRTP and the time and effort to participate in the program.
Students may apply for projects individually or in innovative teams of up to three members each, and students may apply at the latest in their junior year.
The college where the project leader is located should be responsible for project management.
ii. Application Procedures
Each college collects students’ applications, and organizes experts to conduct a preliminary evaluation and determine the order of them in the form of public defenses. According to the quota allocated by CQU, all colleges will submit the relevant projects materials to the Academic Affairs Office. After that, CQU will select some college-recommended projects to take part in the school-level reviews and defenses, and determine the list of national and municipal projects.
iii. Funding
1. In principle, the funds for arts, mathematics, computer, software and other innovative training projects at the national level shall not exceed 5,000 yuan, and the funds for other types of projects shall not exceed 10,000 yuan.
2. The amount of grant for SRTP is subject-specific, ranging from $1000 to $2000, depending on the amount of grant issued by the Academic Affairs Office.
iv. Others
1. Projects last generally 1-2 years.
2. CQU encourages the undergraduate school-level scientific research training project (SRTP) to be upgraded to a national-level innovation and entrepreneurship training project, which must be specified in the project application form. Even if the level of project mentor is upgraded, the project team members cannot be changed.
3. If the SRTP team members want to upgrade their project to the national level, the college needs to assess the implementation of their SRTP project first, and after obtaining the college’s approval, they can apply to upgrade. If the national undergraduate innovation training project successfully gets approval, it must be ensured that the ongoing SRTP project will be completed within one year without delay. Otherwise, the qualification of their national undergraduate innovation training project will be canceled.
