Dear JCI Classes,
Greetings and welcome to the UC-CQU Joint Co-op Institute (JCI)! I am delighted that you have selected the JCI to pursue your undergraduate engineering education.
As the American Co-Director/Co-Dean, it is my role to help manage the superb teams that have been assembled at both universities to help you attain your goals. The faculty and I are excited to meet you and are enthusiastic about the start of the fall semester. Along with the faculty, you will be instructed by American and Chinese teaching assistants who are upper classmen from UC or JCI. In addition, you will be supported by dedicated professional coordinators, advisors, librarians, staff, and administrators. We encourage you to pursue knowledge, be curious, innovate, interact with your colleagues, and above all strive for excellence!
The engineering profession is a noble calling which promotes the welfare of humanity through the application of science. Becoming an engineer is challenging as it requires perseverance, sustained learning, and sincere effort. With your enrollment in the JCI and its unique educational benefits, you will be well prepared to become a leader in society as well as the engineering profession. The curriculum of the UC Engineering College is taught exclusively in English by both the American faculty of UC and the Chinese faculty of CQU. This classroom instruction is complemented with valuable industrial experience that you will receive through co-operative education. You will also have the benefit of studying internationally as your final, senior year will be in Cincinnati. At graduation, you will have earned dual bachelor degrees in engineering from two prominent academic institutions.
Remember that the collegiate experience transcends the classroom. Take advantage of the opportunities to form friendships and participate in new activities while simultaneously growing intellectually and personally.
After graduation, I am confident that your future accomplishments will not only bring personal honor but enhance the legacy of the JCI. In the meantime, I look forward to interacting with you over the next five years at both CQU and UC!
Always feel free to contact me should you have any concerns or questions.
Best wishes,
Thomas R. Huston, PhD, PE
